Statement: These photographs are about people, and what it means to be looked at; not only to reveal the individuality of those who pose before my camera, but also to convey something deeper about how the subjects confront the place where they live and the situation in which they find themselves. On the emotional and narrative level, I am interested in looking at states of being: vulnerability, aging, solitude, death, sensuality, and our desire for connection. Formally, I tend to emphasize the tactile qualities of the living world: skin, hair, light, surface, color, and material. I recognize that these are very broad themes, but they are also the basis for essential philosophical questions. My photographs don’t provide answers to these questions, but hopefully act as moments of contemplation. |
